LIFE IN THE SPIRIT STUDY BIBLE NOTES

29:28 [Laban] gave him Rachel his daughter to wife also. Jacob’s marriage to two sisters conflicted with God’s creation ordinance that marriage should consist of only one man and one woman (see 2:24, note; cf. Ex 20:17; Deut 5:21). Later in the Mosaic Law, God specifically forbade Jacob’s type of marriage (Lev 18:18). The NT revelation regards monogamy (one wife and one husband) as the only rightful form of marriage (Mat 19:4-16; Mark 10:4-9). God may have tolerated polygamy in the OT because the people lacked a full understanding of God’s will regarding marriage and because their hearts were hard. The evil effects of polygamy are described in v. 30; 30:1; 35:22; 1 Ki 11:1-12.

Mark 10:5-9Authorized (King James) Version (AKJV)

And Jesus answered and said unto them, For the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept. But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife; and they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

1 Corinthians 7:1-5Authorized (King James) Version (AKJV)

Now concerning the things whereof ye wrote unto me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman. Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband. Let the husband render unto the wife due benevolence: and likewise also the wife unto the husband. The wife hath not power of her own body, but the husband: and likewise also the husband hath not power of his own body, but the wife.Defraud ye not one the other, except it be with consent for a time, that ye may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again, that Satan tempt you not for your incontinency.
