LIFE IN THE SPIRIT STUDY BIBLE NOTES

7:1 Judge not. Jesus condemns the habit of criticizing others while ignoring one’s own faults. Believers must first submit themselves to God’s righteous standard before attempting to examine and influence the conduct of other Christians (vv. 3-5). Judging in an unjust manner also includes condemning a wrongdoer without desiring to see the offender return to God and His ways (Luke 6:36-37).

(1) Christ is not denying the necessity of exercising a certain degree of discernment or of making value judgements with respect to sin in others. Elsewhere we are commanded to identify false ministers within the church (v. 15) and to evaluate the character of individuals (Mat 7:6; cf. John 7:24; 1 Cor 5:12; see Gal 1:9, note; 1 Tim 4:1, note; 1 John 4:1).

(2) This verse must not be used as an excuse for laxity in exercising church discipline (see Mat 18:15, note).

Hebrews 13:1-7 Authorized (King James) Version (AKJV)

13 Let brotherly love continue. Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them; and them which suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body. Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge. Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me. Remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the word of God: whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation.

Romans 2:1-11 Authorized (King James) Version (AKJV)

Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things. But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commit such things. And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God? Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance? but after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God; who will render to every man according to his deeds: to them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life: but unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath, tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile; 10 but glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile: 11 for there is no respect of persons with God.

Psalm 68:1-6 Authorized (King James) Version (AKJV)

Psalm 68

To the chief Musician, A Psalm or Song of David.

Let God arise, let his enemies be scattered:
let them also that hate him flee before him.
As smoke is driven away, so drive them away:
as wax melteth before the fire, so let the wicked perish at the presence of God.

But let the righteous be glad;
let them rejoice before God: yea, let them exceedingly rejoice.

Sing unto God, sing praises to his name:
extol him that rideth upon the heavens by his name JAH,
and rejoice before him.
A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows,
is God in his holy habitation.
God setteth the solitary in families:
he bringeth out those which are bound with chains:
but the rebellious dwell in a dry land.
