18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;
19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.
20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.
24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:
25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:
27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.
28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.
6 Dare any of you, having a matter against another, go to law before the unjust, and not before the saints?
2 Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters?
3 Know ye not that we shall judge angels? how much more things that pertain to this life?
4 If then ye have judgments of things pertaining to this life, set them to judge who are least esteemed in the church.
5 I speak to your shame. Is it so, that there is not a wise man among you? no, not one that shall be able to judge between his brethren?
6 But brother goeth to law with brother, and that before the unbelievers.

Let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit. (2 Corinthians 7:1)

Jesus offers us an abundant and joyful life, yet in our search for enjoyment and relaxation we often unthinkingly accept the world’s idea of fun. The result: We harm ourselves and our relationship with the Lord.
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. (John 10:10)
I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. (John 15:11)
A good guideline is to only engage in activities Jesus would approve. As John wrote:
Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did. (1 John 2:6)
Much of the entertainment and literature in our society is ungodly. This doesn’t only apply to obvious material such as pornography. It also applies to many regular TV shows and movies, books, magazines, and music.
Let’s take a look at some of the potential dangers from secular entertainment: ·
Much entertainment presents a false or incomplete picture of reality by leaving Christ out. Even if there are no negative references to Christianity, the picture of the world we expose ourselves to may ignore the most important element of truth—God. It is like reading a book about how to survive in the wilderness that does not mention food or water.
If the main thing we fill our minds with are these godless versions of reality, we can come to see Christianity as irrelevant to human interactions and “religion” as only belonging in church.
If you watch TV sitcoms, movies, or pornography, you may internalize a false picture of human relationships. For example, if you watch soap operas, you may become upset because your spouse does not seem as romantic or sexy as the actors and actresses.
I used to spend a couple hours every night after work watching sitcoms and other TV shows, thinking I needed to relax and unwind. But I discovered that when I was done watching, I wasn’t truly relaxed, closer to my wife and children, or nearer to God. Instead, I felt like I was mildly drugged.
We can develop disrespect for pastors or Christianity since few movies or TV shows portray Christians or pastors in a positive light. Pastors and evangelists often are shown as greedy or as lunatics, or both.
The sexuality in most secular entertainment—and I’m writing about most everyday entertainment, not just pornography—portrays sex in a dreadful way. It presents sex simply as an instinctive drive, or it makes adultery and other sexual sins appear romantic and wonderful.
When you expose yourself to these messages, your thoughts about sex are likely to become more like the world’s and less like God’s. You may fantasize about sexual sins.
If you are married, you may become dissatisfied with the way your spouse makes love. On the flip side, you may find yourself thinking that sex is ugly and distasteful and pull away from your mate.
In some instances, violence has an appropriate role in movies and TV shows. But the violent scenes we usually see are brutal, sadistic, and ungodly. If we aren’t careful, we can find ourselves accepting onscreen sinful violence, or even laughing at it.
Some of us may actually find ourselves imitating the violent behavior we see in TV or the movies. I have counseled with many delinquent teenage boys who imitated the violence they saw on TV and in the movies.
Most advertising has one purpose: to make you think you must buy some particular thing to be happy. Movies and TV shows often feature luxurious living and give the message that happiness comes from spending lots of money.
Do not “fool” yourself or allow yourself to be careless. Keep your spiritual eyes open.
I will set before my eyes no vile thing. The deeds of faithless men I hate; they will not cling to me. (Psalm 101:3)
Do not put vile things before your eyes. Do not poison yourself.
Paul gave timeless guidelines when he wrote:
Fight the good fight, holding on to faith and a good conscience. Some have rejected these and so have shipwrecked their faith. (1 Timothy 1:18-19)
We sometimes watch questionable movies or listen to questionable music, thinking that since “everybody” else is listening or watching, it must be okay. Or we think something is acceptable simply because it is not as bad as something else.
Be honest with yourself. Would God want you to watch that movie or TV show? How does it really affect you? Let’s look at two common rationalizations.
“I filter out the bad parts.”
This can be true to a degree, but repetitive exposure usually affects us. Further, the reason we watch or read questionable material often is because we want to enjoy things that we should not enjoy.
“Christian media sometimes gets boring.”
If you are bored with Christian TV or radio shows, don’t let that be an excuse to watch or listen to unprofitable things. There are lots of other ways to spend your time.
I am not trying to lay down an absolute rule that we only watch, read, or listen to things which are overtly Christian. Some secular materials can be educational, entertaining, or uplifting. But I am suggesting that we carefully evaluate what we do for recreation and entertainment, and how these activities affect us.
When you choose entertainment activities, identify those that are both fun and edifying. The following is a short list of ideas. Check those that you would enjoy doing:
___ Study the Bible. ___ Make a great meal and share it with friends.
___ Listen to inspiring radio shows.
___ Visit with friends.
___ Tell jokes.
___ Go to a good musical or play.
___ Listen to uplifting music.
___ Go backpacking or climb a mountain.
___ Play tennis, golf, or another sport.
___ Sing at home.
___ Join a choir.
___ Go for a walk in the park.
___ Play games with friends.
___ Learn to play a musical instrument.
___ Read Christian magazines.
___ Watch a good movie.
___ Read Christian novels or other good books.
___ Read biographies.
___ Listen to an orchestra.
___ Grow a garden.
___ Write letters.
___ Start a collection or develop a hobby.
When we spend too much time watching TV, surfing the Internet or engaging in sports or other activities, we often neglect our family and friends, and our relationships suffer.
Plus, we are not fulfilling God’s purpose for us. He wants us to develop our gifts and to reach out and minister to others. We are called to make a difference in this world, not merely to be spectators.
For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. (Ephesians 2:10)
There may be times when it is appropriate to expose yourself to material that has ungodly elements. For example: studying in school, reading job-related material, watching plays, reading “great literature,” or staying aware of current events, trends, or thoughts.
When you do any of these things, ask God to help you respond in a proper manner. Ask him to protect your spirit and help you not accept ungodly actions, attitudes, or vocabulary as being okay.
Recreation is fine if it is part of a balanced life, but if you mainly live to have fun, you are missing out on God’s purpose for your life and the joy that comes from serving God and helping others. Set your mind on things above.
Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. (Colossians 3:1-2)

God loves you and wants you to experience peace and life – abundant and eternal.

God created us in His own image to have an abundant life. He did not make us as robots to automatically love and obey Him, but gave us a will and a freedom of choice.
We chose to disobey God and go our own willful way. We still make this choice today. This results in separation from God.

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord.” Romans 6:23
Through the ages, individuals have tried in many ways to bridge this gap…without success…
“There is a way that seems right to man, but in the end it leads to death.” Proverbs 14:12
“But your iniquities have separated you from God; and your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He will not hear.” Isaiah 59:2
Jesus Christ is the only answer to this problem. He died on the Cross and rose from the grave, paying the penalty for our sin and bridging the gap between God and people.
“…God is on one side and all the people on the other side, and Jesus Christ, Himself man, is between them to bring them together…” 1 Timothy 2:5
“For Christ also has suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God…” 1 Peter 3:18a
“But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8
We must trust Jesus Christ and receive Him by personal invitation.
“Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come into him, and will dine with him, and he with Me.” Revelation 3:20

Salvation Prayer
Dear God in heaven, I come to you in the name of Jesus. I acknowledge to You that I am a sinner, and I am sorry for my sins and the life that I have lived; I need your forgiveness.
I believe that your only begotten Son Jesus Christ shed His precious blood on the cross at Calvary and died for my sins, and I am now willing to turn from my sin.
You said in Your Holy Word, Romans 10:9 that if we confess the Lord our God and believe in our hearts that God raised Jesus from the dead, we shall be saved.
Right now I confess Jesus as the Lord of my soul. With my heart, I believe that God raised Jesus from the dead. This very moment I accept Jesus Christ as my own personal Savior and according to His Word, right now I am saved.

Let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit. (2 Corinthians 7:1)
(This study is one of a series dealing with cultural contamination. It is adapted from Defeating Temptation: Biblical Secrets to Self-Control.)
Jesus offers us an abundant and joyful life, yet in our search for enjoyment and relaxation we often unthinkingly accept the world’s idea of fun. The result: We harm ourselves and our relationship with the Lord.
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. (John 10:10)
I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. (John 15:11)
A good guideline is to only engage in activities Jesus would approve. As John wrote:
Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did. (1 John 2:6)
Much of the entertainment and literature in our society is ungodly. This doesn’t only apply to obvious material such as pornography. It also applies to many regular TV shows and movies, books, magazines, and music.
Let’s take a look at some of the potential dangers from secular entertainment: ·
Much entertainment presents a false or incomplete picture of reality by leaving Christ out. Even if there are no negative references to Christianity, the picture of the world we expose ourselves to may ignore the most important element of truth—God. It is like reading a book about how to survive in the wilderness that does not mention food or water.
If the main thing we fill our minds with are these godless versions of reality, we can come to see Christianity as irrelevant to human interactions and “religion” as only belonging in church.
If you watch TV sitcoms, movies, or pornography, you may internalize a false picture of human relationships. For example, if you watch soap operas, you may become upset because your spouse does not seem as romantic or sexy as the actors and actresses.
I used to spend a couple hours every night after work watching sitcoms and other TV shows, thinking I needed to relax and unwind. But I discovered that when I was done watching, I wasn’t truly relaxed, closer to my wife and children, or nearer to God. Instead, I felt like I was mildly drugged.
We can develop disrespect for pastors or Christianity since few movies or TV shows portray Christians or pastors in a positive light. Pastors and evangelists often are shown as greedy or as lunatics, or both.
The sexuality in most secular entertainment—and I’m writing about most everyday entertainment, not just pornography—portrays sex in a dreadful way. It presents sex simply as an instinctive drive, or it makes adultery and other sexual sins appear romantic and wonderful.
When you expose yourself to these messages, your thoughts about sex are likely to become more like the world’s and less like God’s. You may fantasize about sexual sins.
If you are married, you may become dissatisfied with the way your spouse makes love. On the flip side, you may find yourself thinking that sex is ugly and distasteful and pull away from your mate.
In some instances, violence has an appropriate role in movies and TV shows. But the violent scenes we usually see are brutal, sadistic, and ungodly. If we aren’t careful, we can find ourselves accepting onscreen sinful violence, or even laughing at it.
Some of us may actually find ourselves imitating the violent behavior we see in TV or the movies. I have counseled with many delinquent teenage boys who imitated the violence they saw on TV and in the movies.
Most advertising has one purpose: to make you think you must buy some particular thing to be happy. Movies and TV shows often feature luxurious living and give the message that happiness comes from spending lots of money.
Do not “fool” yourself or allow yourself to be careless. Keep your spiritual eyes open.
I will set before my eyes no vile thing. The deeds of faithless men I hate; they will not cling to me. (Psalm 101:3)
Do not put vile things before your eyes. Do not poison yourself.
Paul gave timeless guidelines when he wrote:
Fight the good fight, holding on to faith and a good conscience. Some have rejected these and so have shipwrecked their faith. (1 Timothy 1:18-19)
We sometimes watch questionable movies or listen to questionable music, thinking that since “everybody” else is listening or watching, it must be okay. Or we think something is acceptable simply because it is not as bad as something else.
Be honest with yourself. Would God want you to watch that movie or TV show? How does it really affect you? Let’s look at two common rationalizations.
“I filter out the bad parts.”
This can be true to a degree, but repetitive exposure usually affects us. Further, the reason we watch or read questionable material often is because we want to enjoy things that we should not enjoy.
“Christian media sometimes gets boring.”
If you are bored with Christian TV or radio shows, don’t let that be an excuse to watch or listen to unprofitable things. There are lots of other ways to spend your time.
I am not trying to lay down an absolute rule that we only watch, read, or listen to things which are overtly Christian. Some secular materials can be educational, entertaining, or uplifting. But I am suggesting that we carefully evaluate what we do for recreation and entertainment, and how these activities affect us.
When you choose entertainment activities, identify those that are both fun and edifying. The following is a short list of ideas. Check those that you would enjoy doing:
___ Study the Bible. ___ Make a great meal and share it with friends.
___ Listen to inspiring radio shows.
___ Visit with friends.
___ Tell jokes.
___ Go to a good musical or play.
___ Listen to uplifting music.
___ Go backpacking or climb a mountain.
___ Play tennis, golf, or another sport.
___ Sing at home.
___ Join a choir.
___ Go for a walk in the park.
___ Play games with friends.
___ Learn to play a musical instrument.
___ Read Christian magazines.
___ Watch a good movie.
___ Read Christian novels or other good books.
___ Read biographies.
___ Listen to an orchestra.
___ Grow a garden.
___ Write letters.
___ Start a collection or develop a hobby.

Sanctification (Gk hagiasmos) means to make holy, to consecrate, to separate from the world, and to be set apart from sin so that we may have intimate fellowship with God and serve Him gladly (see article on Spiritual Separation for Believers, p. 1827).
(1) In addition to the word “sanctify” (cf. 1 Thes 5:23), the Scriptural standard of sanctification is expressed in such terms as “love the Lord thy God with all thy heart .. : soul .. mind” (Mat 22:37), “unblameable in holiness” (1 Thes 3:13), “perfecting holiness” (2 Cor 7:1), “charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned” (1 Tim 1 :5), “sincere and without offence” (Phil 1 :10), “made free from sin” (Rom 6:18). “dead to sin” (Rom 6:2). “servants to righteousness unto holiness” (Rom 6:19), “keep his commands” (1 John 3:22), and “overcometh the world” (1 John 5:4). Such terms describe the operation of the Holy Spirit through

salvation in Christ by which He delivers us from sin’s bondage and power Rom 6:1-11), separates us from the sinful practices of this present world, renews our nature according to the image of Christ, produces in us the fruit of the Spirit, and enables us to live holy and victorious lives of dedication to God (John 17:15-19,23; Rom 6:5,13,16,19; 12:1; Gal 5:16,22-23; see 2 Cor 5:17, note).
(2) These terms do not imply an absolute perfection, but an ethical righteousness of unblemished character demonstrated in purity, obedience and blamelessness. (Phil 2:14-15; Col 1:22; 1 Thes 2:10; cf. Luke 1 :6). Christians, by the grace of God given to them, have died with Christ and are set free from sin’s power and dominion (Rom 6:18); therefore, they need not and ought not sin, but can find adequate victory in their Savior, Jesus Christ. Through the Holy Spirit we are able not to sin (1 John 2:1; 3:6), even though we never come to the place where we are free from temptation and the possibility of sin.
(3) Sanctification was God’s will for the Israelites in the OT; they were to live holy or sanctified lives, separated from the lifestyles of the nations around them (see Ex 19:6, note; Lev 11 :44, note; 19:2, note; 2 Chr 29:5, note). Likewise, sanctification is a requirement for believers in Christ. Scripture teaches that “without [holiness] no man shall see the Lord” (Heb 12:14). God, who justifies the repentant sinner, desires to sanctify the believer’s spirit, soul and body (1 Thes 5:23).
(4) God’s children achieve sanctification by faith (Acts 26:18), by union with Christ in His death and resurrection (John 15:4-10; Rom 6:1-11; 1 Cor 1 :30), by the blood of Christ (1 John 1 :7-9). by the Word (John 17:17), and by the regenerating and sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit in their hearts (Jer 31 :31-34; Rom 8:13; 1 Cor 6:11; Phil 2:12-13; 2 Thes 2:13).
(5) Sanctification is both a work of God and a work of His people (Phil 2:12-13). In order to accomplish God’s will in sanctification, believers must participate in the Spirit’s sanctifying work by ceasing to do evil (Rom 6:1-2), purifying themselves “from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit” (2 Cor 7:1; cf. Rom 6:12; Gal 5:16-25), and keeping themselves from being polluted by the world (Jas 1 :27; cf. Rom 6:13,19; 8: 13; 12:1-2; 13:14; Eph 4:31; 5:18; Col 3:5,10; Heb 6: 1; Jas 4:8).
(6) True sanctification requires that believers maintain intimate communion with Christ (see John 15:4, note), engage in fellowship with believers (Eph 4:15-16), devote themselves to prayer (Mat 6:5-13; CoI4:2) obey God’s Word (John 17:17), be sensitive to God’s presence and care (Mat 6:25-34), love righteousness and hate wickedness (Heb 1 :9), put sin to death (Rom 6), submit to God’s discipline (Heb 12:5-11), continue to obey, and be filled with the Holy Spirit (Rom 8:14; Eph 5:18).
(7) In the NT, sanctification is not pictured as a slow process of forsaking sin little by little. Rather, it is presented as a definitive act by which the believer by grace is set free from Satan’s bondage and makes a clear break with sin in order to live for God (Rom 6:18; 2 Cor 5:17; Eph 2:4-6; CoI3:1-3). At the same time, however, sanctification is described as a lifelong process by which we continue to put to death the misdeeds of the body (Rom 8:1-17), are progressively transformed into Christ’s likeness (2 Cor 3:18), grow in grace (2 Pet 3:18), and exercise a greater love for God and others (Mat 22:37-39; 1 John 4:7-8,11,20-21).
(8) Sanctification may involve a holy encounter with God after initial salvation (cf. Is 6:-1-8). Believers may receive a clear revelation of God’s holiness as well as a consciousness that God is calling them to separate themselves in a greater way from sin and the world and for a holy, intimate relationship with God (2 Cor 6: 16-18). Through this awareness, believers present themselves to God as living sacrifices and receive from the Holy Spirit grace, purity and enabling power to live holy lives pleasing to God (Rom 6:19-22; 12:1-2). God the Father delights in transforming sinners into saints (i.e. holy ones) so as to have a holy bride for His Son (Eph. 5:25-27).”
